Just kidding. I did some more work on the E30 last night. I needed to make a patch for the bottom of the A pillar and it was a bit of a tricky shape. It may not look like much but it took some patience as well as a few different hammers to shape this patch on the car.
The hole to fill...
Cut a piece that’s roughly the shape and hammer it a bit to get the contour of the one straight edge...
Then tack...hammer...tack...hammer...tack...hammer... you get the idea...
Hammer some more... grind... grind...grind...
A little bit more welding and grinding to fit the pits along the seam and she’ll be good to go!

Nice. I finally got started with patches in mine. I started with the jacking point/footwell. I don’t have a picture of that bottom piece but that’s probably for the best, the contour/bend upwards looks like ass, haha. :) I might re-do that bit.
Welding on sheetmetal is proving difficult. I occasionally poke holes where I’ve just put fresh metal (see the corner of that top piece) but I’m getting better.

Nice. It looks like you’re trying to do butt welds there? In spots that won’t be visible, like the floors, it’s much easier to weld if you make the patch overlap. It doesn’t have to be much either. Say you make your template that fits, then you trace it onto the sheet with a fat marker. Cut the patch out on the outside of the marker line rather than the inside. That 1/8” of overlap will make it a lot harder to burn through than if you were doing a butt weld.

Yep, but welds. Good point about it not being visible and thanks for the tip. I will probably end up doing that for any remaining patches down there, and anything I re-do. All the joints will end up hidden by seam sealer anyway so I should stop caring what it looks like.

Yeah, doing that was my first thought. I just wasn’t sure if the pits were too shallow to get good bonding. I haven’t used body filler yet on my adventures.

Damn! I REALLY need to get a welder! I could do so much more if I had one. Off to the classifieds I go. Are you using gas or just flux core wire?

Check both your heat and your wire feed. I do not mean to be a picky son of a bitch but your tacks are pretty big and tall. For body steel they don’t need to be that big.

I’m using gas. I’ve got an OLD millermatic 200 that use to be my Uncle’s back in the day. It’s not as adjustable as new machines are with only 6 “heat” settings lol and high and low voltage, but it gets the job done.

I think I need to change to thinner wire actually (might be 0.035 in there right now, which is too much for 18Ga sheet, 0.030 if not). I’m needing the heat so the wire actually melts. I may have to pick up some 0.025” wire. Feel free to be picky, my welding needs all the feedback it can get. :)

I want to say my welder has .023 in it for doing body panels which are 20-22 gauge or so.
Don’t forget to skip around when you are taking as too much heat will warp the metal.

Body filler is another one of those fun minute to learn lifetime to master skills. Fortunately it is cheap and forgiving, if you mess up it just costs you a bunch of time sanding out the botched job and trying again.

That’s what I’ve been doing on my Buick. Nobody makes panels for the mighty giant, so I have to make everything myself. Next up is to pull the rear window and patch up the lower corners. Not gonna be fun until I have the rear glass out in one piece.
